皮納圖博火山：沉睡後的怒吼

Mount Pinatubo (皮納圖博火山) 本來大家認定他是一座死火山，在沉寂 600 年後，卻在 1991 年 6 月一夜之間噴出高達四十公里的火山灰。1991 年 6 月我還在念國三吧！

根據兒時的印象，從電視上看到記者拍攝到的火山爆發實況，到現在想起來還是心有餘悸。只是隨著時光消逝，十七個年頭過去了，除了當地的居民之外，這件事情應該也大部分都被遺忘了吧？

Mount Pinatubo was originally considered a dormant volcano. However, after 600 years of silence, it suddenly erupted in June 1991, spewing ash 40 kilometers into the sky overnight. I think I was in 9th grade back in June 1991!
I still have lingering fears recalling the live eruption footage captured by reporters on TV from my childhood. But as time goes by, 17 years have passed. Except for the local residents, most people have probably forgotten about this event, haven't they?

這個火山爆發事件，也促使美國空軍退出菲國。因為降下的火山灰將附近的美軍克拉克空軍基地幾乎完全覆蓋。美軍當時評估，整修費用金額龐大，不符合經濟效益，所以結束二戰之後駐防菲律賓的歷史。我想，美軍退出菲律賓，應該算是菲律賓建國歷史上的一個里程碑吧！

This volcanic eruption also prompted the US Air Force to withdraw from the Philippines. The falling volcanic ash almost completely covered the nearby Clark Air Base. At the time, the US military assessed that the restoration costs would be astronomical and not economically viable, thus ending their history of stationing in the Philippines since WWII. I believe the US withdrawal marks a significant milestone in the history of the Philippines.

凌晨出發：前往死亡火山的路上

言歸正傳，這次有機會跟這有名的火山親近，還是拜我好朋友 NOEL 的關係。昨天下午我去超市補貨的時候，突然接到他的電話，問我今天有沒有時間跟他去皮納圖博火山玩？當時的我只想到之前火山爆發，還一直以為皮納圖博火山可以看岩漿咧~ 老實說，當時的心情相當複雜，因為我是俗辣阿~~ 可是難得好友相約，不去也覺得亂奇怪一把的，重點是早上五點多要出發，這點我考慮了兩秒。不過最後，還好我還是答應他了，好里家在~~~ XD

Back to the main topic, the chance to get close to this famous volcano was thanks to my good friend, NOEL. Yesterday afternoon, while I was restocking at the supermarket, I suddenly received his call asking if I had time to go to Mount Pinatubo with him today. At that moment, I only thought of the previous eruption and kept assuming we could see magma there! Honestly, I had mixed feelings because I'm a coward (Sula)~ But it's rare for a good friend to invite me, and it would be weird not to go. The main point was that we had to leave at 5 AM, which I considered for about two seconds. But in the end, thankfully, I agreed. Phew, that was a close call! XD

準備出發

這時還不知道今天要溯溪...

早上五點，朋友準時到我家門口，之後換乘我的大白，由司機 ALLAN 開車一路往死亡火山前進！約莫兩個半小時的車程，我們來到了搭乘四輪傳動吉普車的地點。這個行程，單程包含一小時的吉普車 (開溪底，真正 OFF ROAD) 加上約兩個半小時的溯溪健行，要價是每人 1500 披索。其中包括午餐以及一位專業嚮導帶我們一起走。跟接待的人選定好午餐是韓國式(?)餐點之後，我們就搭上吉普車往目標邁進囉~~~~

At 5 AM sharp, my friend arrived at my door. We then switched to my white car, and our driver, ALLAN, drove us all the way toward the Death Volcano! After about a 2.5-hour drive, we arrived at the 4x4 jeep station. This trip includes a one-hour jeep ride (driving on the riverbed, real OFF-ROAD) plus about 2.5 hours of river trekking/hiking each way. The cost is 1500 pesos per person, which includes lunch and a professional guide. After selecting a Korean-style (?) lunch with the receptionist, we hopped on the jeep and headed towards our target!

接下來，就是我這輩子打死也不會想說有機會經歷到的... 四驅車戰溪底... 阿娘威~~~ 當車子漸漸接近河床(也就是我們的"路")的時候，首先映入眼簾的景象就已經先把我收服了....

As the car gradually approached the riverbed (which was our "road"), the first sight that came into view had already conquered me...

The badlands wilderness before my eyes truly made me understand the meaning of "vastness."

車子不停的疾駛著 (應該說抖抖抖)，前方好像沒有盡頭，途中遇到很多牛車。 突然發現，牛車好像是在這惡地上最適合搭乘的交通工具 XD

The car kept speeding (or rather, shaking and trembling). There seemed to be no end in front of us. Along the way, we encountered many oxcarts. Suddenly, I realized that oxcarts seem to be the most suitable mode of transport in this badland! XD

惡地上的生命力：牛車與居民

這惡地最適合的交通工具：牛車

這些牛車載一包一包的，就是居民去採的野生香蕉花，這在菲律賓是拿來當菜吃的！惡地種不出什麼東西，人們只能前往採摘野生的香蕉花維生。

These oxcarts are carrying bags of wild banana flowers harvested by the residents. In the Philippines, these are eaten as a vegetable! Nothing grows in the badlands, so people have to go out and pick wild banana flowers to make a living.

讓牛休息一下

一路上，其實看到很多牛車都是小朋友在駕駛的。看到居民跟牛的互動，突然讓我體會到為什麼很多人家裡都不吃牛肉。也許就是這一份人跟牛之間很特別的感情吧？不過牛肉依舊是我的最愛~~ XD

Along the way, I actually saw many kids driving the oxcarts. Seeing the interaction between the residents and their cows, I suddenly understood why many families don't eat beef. Maybe it's because of this special bond between humans and cows? However, beef is still my favorite~~ XD

The whole ride was shaky; I couldn't even hold my camera steady. Just when I had composed the shot, it got "shaken" away immediately~ Ugh (Jiong).
