I remember the year I retired from the Marine Corps and briefly headed north to Taipei to work hard. At that time, I lived near Wanhua and Ximending. Although the internet already existed back then, it wasn’t nearly as convenient as it is now. Just the speed alone has increased several times over, hasn’t it? Because of this, finding some good shops back then relied not only on friends’ recommendations and guidance but also required a bit of luck to discover them on my own—perhaps about thirty percent luck, to be precise.

There are many old snack shops in Ximending, and one that left a deep impression on me is "Shi Fujian Tasty Chicken"—a truly unforgettable place. Located at the intersection of Huanhe South Road and Hankou Street, this area is a well-known hardware district in Taipei, and this shop has been standing here, operating for 56 years now. The way I discovered this shop back then was almost magical. I remember it was during the MSN Messenger era. One day, I saw a friend's status message saying, "Tasty Chicken is so delicious." I assumed it was the name of a restaurant, and to my surprise, by sheer luck, I stumbled upon a shop with a sign that said "Tasty Chicken." Even more surprising was that I later found out my friend had never even been to this area…
Anyway, this shop secured a place in my memory just like that. This time, taking advantage of the opportunity during the "Refrigerator Party's" spring outing to Taipei, I got off the bus and led the entire group of loyal party members here for lunch. We came to experience what, back in the day, was considered a feast-level meal in the eyes of the broke chairman.
The shop only sells three items: poached native chicken, chicken oil rice, and offal soup. Although the offal soup is just 10 NT dollars per bowl, I’ve never had the chance to try even half a bowl in my life because I always arrive late.
Unlike the typical Chiayi-style chicken rice, where shredded chicken is piled on top of the rice, here, when you eat chicken rice, it’s all about enjoying native chicken served alongside the rice.
The chicken is often piled high like a mountain, but it’s quite common for the shop to close early because business is absolutely booming. Comparing it to the photos from previous food reviews, it seems like the owner might have changed? But that doesn’t matter—what’s important is that the food is delicious. After all, you can’t eat the owner, and that’s not the focus of this discussion.
Oh, and regarding some self-proclaimed "foodies" who always make a fuss about street food stalls using MSG: I just want to say, back when MSG was first introduced to Taiwan, it was considered a luxury item and actually laid the foundation for the "old-fashioned flavors" of Taiwanese snacks. Personally, I’ve had allergic reactions to excessive MSG consumption, but whether or not a shop uses MSG has nothing to do with the deliciousness of its dishes or the ethics of running a business.
The dining environment exudes a sense of timelessness, rich with nostalgia. It has remained unchanged for decades, evoking memories of Taiwan when I was young—back when many small eateries looked just like this.
When ordering, if you don’t specify your preferences, the shop will automatically portion the dishes based on the number of people at the table.
The chicken used here seems to be a semi-free-range native chicken. After being poached and chopped into pieces, it’s simply drizzled with a traditional soy sauce paste—no other aromatic ingredients like garlic, scallions, or ginger are used.
Perhaps it was because the weather was a bit chilly that day, but the chicken skin had a springy yet crispy texture, while the meat, being from a free-range variety, was chewy but not overly so. Most importantly, it wasn’t greasy at all. This plate of chicken seemed to be priced at 150 NT dollars, and I noticed that the price hasn’t changed since 2011. Truly a blessing for diners. If you’re curious, you can refer to my 2011 food review for comparison.
The chicken was incredibly fresh, with no trace of any unpleasant odors. In summary, the shop aims to serve chicken in the simplest cooking style, proving that even a humble meal can be extraordinary.
Chicken Oil Rice (10 NT)
The white rice was perfectly cooked, with every grain distinct, topped with chicken oil and traditional soy sauce paste. Simple and straightforward, yet its flavor carried with it the memories of my younger days when I came to Taipei alone to make a living. Having grown accustomed to extravagant meals, sometimes the most delicious dish is the one infused with nostalgia. It can be as simple as this.
Clear Chicken Soup (Free)
Although the shop also sells offal soup—which I’ve heard is loaded with ingredients and only costs 10 NT—I’ve never had the chance to try it. People say that if you can’t get the offal soup, at least you should try the free clear soup. Rest assured, the shop provides this clear chicken soup free of charge. It has a faint herbal flavor, making it quite tasty. On a cold day, a bowl of this soup warms both the body and the heart.
